James ("Jim") is a registered patent attorney and serves as a managing partner of the firm. Jim has nearly 20 years of experience representing clients in intellectual property matters with a particular emphasis on patent application prosecution, including both domestic and international matters. Jim also counsels clients in strategic intellectual property planning and opinion work, including product and service clearance with regards to the intellectual property of competitors. Clients include large corporations and small companies, university researchers and individuals.
Before joining Tillman, Wright & Wolgin, Jim worked as a patent attorney in the patent groups of the Atlanta-based international law firm of Troutman Sanders LLP and Charlotte-based Kennedy Covington Lobdell & Hickman LLP (now part of international law firm K&L Gates LLP). Jim graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1997. While in law school, he served on the North Carolina Law Review.
Prior to law school, Jim spent 6 years as an engineer with IBM in upstate New York, where he oversaw the integration of chip sets and modules into portions of IBM's massive mainframe computers.
